Div 2 Adult Hurling League Rd 4: Dunboyne stay perfect with strong win over Kilyon
Dunboyne made it four wins from four with a well-earned 1-22 to 0-16 victory over Kilyon in perfect conditions on Rooske earlier this evening. A goal just before half-time from Jason Gleeson created crucial daylight between the sides after a tight opening 30 minutes, and it proved to be a lead Dunboyne would never surrender.
A cagey opening eight minutes saw the sides level at three points apiece, with the ever-reliable Sean Quigley, who finished with an impressive 15 points, accounting for Dunboyne’s early scores from placed balls. Conor Gilmartin opened Dunboyne’s scoring from play before Sean Cregan added another following an excellent clearance up the line from the impressive James Lonergan.
Three more Quigley frees stretched Dunboyne’s lead to four points, leaving the score at Dunboyne 0-08, Kilyon 0-04. However, Kilyon responded strongly, enjoying a purple patch with four excellent points from play to draw level by the 23rd minute.
Two more Quigley frees edged the hosts back in front before Gleeson, after being brilliantly picked out by Niall Smith, burst through the heart of the Kilyon defence and rattled the net for the game’s only goal. The half-time whistle sounded shortly after, with Dunboyne leading 1-10 to 0-09.
Dunboyne started the second half in style, with Eoghan McCormack landing the score of the game from way out on the right-hand sideline. Quigley followed with three more points, two from frees, before Gleeson split the posts from distance. By the midway point of the half, Dunboyne had extended their advantage to 1-15 to 0-12.
Kilyon’s task became even tougher when their full-forward was shown a red card. Dunboyne kept up the pressure, with Gleeson adding another fine point before Quigley continued his accuracy from placed balls. Jason’s, Nolan and Gleeson, added further scores before Quigley had the final say with another free.
